In a press junket, Cassper Nyovest detailed his ambitions to create incubators in small towns in order to get the youth focussing their time on developing themselves. A big driver behind this ambition is the spate of drug abuse that he himself has witnessed, both as a teen and now as Cassper Nyovest.
“The first time I saw cocaine, I was 16-years-old and I was in Joburg,” he remembers. “And it was the scariest thing I have ever experienced in my life. It was so scary. I thought it was possible for this coke to just fly into my nose,” he joked while mimicking how he would cover his nose.
Today, he sees the same issue prevalent in the hood and feels the need to do something about it. “It was so foreign and outlandish to go back home and see 14-year-olds do cocaine in my hood and realise that these kids don’t have anything to aspire to.”
His answer to the problem? “That’s why I say I wanna create incubators and I’ve had meetings and meetings about my ideas of creating incubators in actual industries in small towns where these kids don’t have to leave Maftown and come to Joburg to pursue a career in arts. We could actually create industries in these small communities and create incubators and have kids go through steps and look forward to become something instead of just smoking weed every day because hip hop says so.”
